Werder Bremen captain makes bold claim about Per Mertesacker and Arsenal transfer

The Arsenal centre-half appears to be open to a return to Werder Bremen in the future

Clemens Fritz has opened the door for Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker to seal a return to Werder Bremen in the future.

The retired Germany international hasn’t featured for the north London club in the 2016-17 Premier League season so far after the towering defender suffered a knee injury in the summer.

Mertesacker is facing a battle to secure a place in Arsene Wenger’s side upon his return from his knee problem after the Arsenal manager signed Germany’s versatile Shkodran Mustafi in a £35m deal from La Liga outfit Valencia in the final week of the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old has struck up a promising centre-half partnership with France international Laurent Koscielny over Arsenal’s past four Premier League games, which has seen Wenger’s side beat Southampton, Hull City, Chelsea and Burnley.

Werder Bremen captain Fritz has confirmed that he has discussed a potential return to the Bundesliga club with Mertesacker, with the 32-year-old’s future at Arsenal uncertain.

“We’ve talked about it [a return to Bremen]. It would be a good thing for the club,” Fritz told Bild – as quoted by Sky Sports News.
