Charlie Nicholas states his prediction for West Ham v Chelsea

Charlie Nicholas is tipping West Ham to edge past Chelsea and into the League Cup quarter-finals

Charlie Nicholas is tipping West Ham United to book their place in the quarter-finals of the League Cup with a penalty-shootout victory over Chelsea on Wednesday night.

The Blues head into the game looking to keep up their good form after their 4-0 thrashing of Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday.

Antonio Conte’s men have looked in good form in recent weeks and have won their last three games in the Premier League.

West Ham, meanwhile, warmed up for the cup clash with a dramatic win over Sunderland at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Former Arsenal man Nicholas is tipping the game to end in a 1-1 draw – but for West Ham to triumph on penalties after extra-time.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Nicholas said: “This is another really decent game. It’s been two 1-0 wins for West Ham with Winston Reid back in team, making the difference at both ends.

“If you think there’s a poor atmosphere at the London Stadium then this will test it because these Chelsea fans will make it a feisty one. This is another game, like the Manchester derby, which is going to lack discipline.

“Antonio Conte will make changes but, with the likes of Cesc Fabregas, John Terry and Willian potentially coming in, it won’t be a weak Chelsea side.

“Neither side will want to give up an inch and I can see this going all the way, with West Ham winning on penalties.”
