Arsenal legend criticises Jose Mourinho’s handling of Man United duo
Martin Keown believes Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was wrong to criticise Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling in the media
Martin Keown says Jose Mourinho was wrong to criticise Manchester United duo Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling in the media.
The Red Devils defenders didn’t feature in Sunday’s 3-1 win against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium due niggling injuries.
Mourinho appeared to question the commitment of the England internationals in his post-match interview following Manchester United’s first victory in five attempts in the Premier League.
Unsurprisingly, the manager’s comments have provided a talking point throughout the international break so far, with Gary Neville questioning Mourinho’s approach to the situation.
While Keown can understand why the Red Devils boss may have been frustrated with Smalling and Shaw’s reluctance to play, the former Arsenal defender believes Mourinho should have kept his feelings private.
“Mourinho’s comments may have been down to timing,” Keown told The Daily Mail.
“If the players trained the day before and weren’t brave enough to pull out earlier, they could have left the manager in a tight spot by withdrawing before the game.
“But Manchester United won the game comfortably and all Mourinho has done is create damage. This would have been better to keep in-house. There is no need to air your dirty laundry in public.”
Manchester United are in sixth place in the Premier League table and eight points adrift of leaders Liverpool after 11 top-flight games.
The Red Devils will host bitter rivals Arsenal in their next Premier League fixture at Old Trafford on Saturday 19 November.
