Arsenal legend explains why Man United fans should be positive
Martin Keown insists that it is not all doom and gloom at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho
Martin Keown has insisted that there are plenty of reasons for Manchester United fans to be positive this season – despite their stuttering start under Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils lost further ground on their title rivals on Sunday afternoon as they were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham United at Old Trafford.
The result came as a significant blow to the Red Devils, who now trail Premier League leaders Chelsea by a staggering 11 points after 13 games of the new season.
It has been a frustrating start to life at Old Trafford for Mourinho, with the Red Devils failing to produce consistent performances and having won just two of their last 10 top-flight games.
However, despite conceding that Manchester United’s title hopes are effectively over, Keown stressed that the Red Devils have been unlucky this term.
Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Keown said: “It is only the end of November but, Manchester United’s title hopes are already over – they simply have too much ground to make up.
“I actually thought that before they were held at home by West Ham on Sunday, their fifth draw in their past seven league games – a run that has seen them fall off the pace.
“But it is not all doom and gloom at Old Trafford, despite United being 11 points behind leaders Chelsea and eight points off the top four.
“The players are giving everything they can and manager Jose Mourinho is right to complain his side have been unlucky. That was certainly the case against the Hammers.
“Sunday’s game was similar to Manchester United’s draw with Burnley at the end of October, in that they came up against a goalkeeper who made some incredible saves.”
Manchester United will attempt to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they travel to Everton on Sunday afternoon.
