Arsenal legend predicts where Man United will finish this season
Alan Smith has his say on how Manchester United's first season under Jose Mourinho is shaping up
Alan Smith has ruled Manchester United out of the Premier League title race this season.
The Red Devils have made a stuttering start to life under new boss Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford following his appointment as the club’s new manager back in May.
Mourinho’s men have struggled to produce consistent form in all competitions, and the Red Devils were held to another frustrating draw by West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
That result left the Red Devils trailing Premier League leaders Chelsea by 11 points after 13 games of the new season and with the pressure firmly on the new man in charge at Old Trafford.
Former Arsenal star Smith believes that United are already out of the title race, and warned the Red Devils that they face a significant uphill struggle in trying to break back into the the top four this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ on Monday morning, Smith said: “I don’t think they’re going to win the title and I’m not sure Jose Mourinho would believe that [they can].
“He’s a realist and he knows what he’s got there and what he’s up against.
“To finish in the top four, I think he’d take that right now – and that would be an achievement when you look at the competition.
“At the moment, it’s looking like fifth or sixth.”
