Arsenal legend: Why I’d be amazing if Arsene Wenger made world-class signing
Alan Smith believes Arsene Wenger will struggle to find players to improve his Arsenal squad despite needing world-class striker
Alan Smith has admitted that he would be amazed if Arsene Wenger managed to earmark a world-class signing to improve his Arsenal squad in January.
The Gunners have made a decent start to the 2016-17 Premier League season and the north London side are within touching distance of their title rivals.
Arsenal moved to within three points of leaders Chelsea after their unconvincing 3-1 win against Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon courtesy of goals from Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott.
The Chile international has now scored eight times in 13 Premier League appearances after being switched into a centre-forward role in the Arsenal line-up this season.
However, former Arsenal striker Smith believes Wenger still needs to add a world-class centre-forward to his squad but the top-flight winner doubts whether the Gunners boss will do that in the January transfer window.
“Any manager would want to strengthen – if you can bring in players who are better than what you’ve got then it’s a no brainer,” Smith told Sky Sports News HQ on Monday morning.
“I don’t think he’ll be able to do that in January – I’d be amazed if he could. How long have we been saying that he needs to buy a world-class striker? Maybe Sanchez’s impact has lessened that need.
“He’s frustrated fans with his slowness in the transfer market but if they’re in a good position, it’s fantastic to get someone in to give you that added momentum. But it’s difficult to do that.”
Arsenal are eight points ahead of Manchester United in the race to secure a place in the top four.
