Arsenal star lifts lid on unusual circumstances surrounding his transfer
Mohamed Elneny was not Arsenal's first transfer target...
Mohamed Elneny has revealed that Arsenal only ended up making a move to sign him after they were scouting one of his former team-mates.
The Egypt midfielder joined the Gunners from FC Basel in January 2016 and has made a string of impressive performances for Arsene Wenger’s men.
However, Elneny has claimed that Arsenal were first keeping tabs on Fabian Schar at FC Basel before the Egyptian caught the eye of the Gunners representatives.
And the midfielder has lifted the lid on how the transfer unfolded from his perspective.
Speaking in an interview with DMC Sports, Elneny said: “I was very happy when I joined Arsenal but I asked one of my friends how the negotiations started and if they had scouted me before.
“He told me that Arsenal officials were scouting Fabian Schar in the first place, and that’s when they noticed me.
“All of us at Basel knew that Schar was linked with Arsenal and at every season’s end, we congratulated him as the move was close to completion, according to Schar himself. But afterwards, things changed quickly.
“My agent told me that Arsenal officials came many times to watch Schar but they were impressed every time by my performances and development and they went on to sign me instead.”
Elneny will be hoping to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with a home clash against Bournemouth at The Emirates.
The north London side have drawn their last three games in all competitions to leave them desperate to return to winning ways and get their Premier League title bid back on track.
