Arsene Wenger has warned his Arsenal players that they will have to be at their best to get a positive result against Tottenham in Sunday’s north London derby clash at The Emirates.

The Gunners head into the game in fine form and having earned plenty of praise for their recent performances this season.

Arsenal are gearing up for the derby showdown fresh from having booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League thanks to Tuesday night’s 3-2 win at Ludogorets.

Tottenham, meanwhile, will be looking for a boost after having lost 1-0 to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday night at Wembley to dent their hopes of reaching the last 16 of Europe’s elite club competition.

It is no surprise that Arsenal are clear favourites with the bookies, with the Gunners currently second in the Premier League and level on points with leaders Manchester City.

However, Wenger is wary of the threat posed by Tottenham when the Gunners host their bitter local rivals on Sunday – despite Spurs’ recent stuttering form.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday morning, Wenger said: “It is an interesting clash.

“For us it is a very important game because we are in a strong position in the league that we want to strengthen.

“Overall Tottenham [are in a good position] as well, so it is very tight at the top of the league.

“We are more focused that it is a home game, and whether it is Tottenham or somebody else, we want to win our home games because our position in the league is very important. We go into a period where we play big games and we want to win the big games.”

He added: “We have to expect Tottenham to be at their best and respond really with a performance that will be effective.”
