Glenn Hoddle: Why Anthony Martial lacks confidence under Man United manager
The former Tottenham manager runs the rule over struggling Manchester United striker Anthony Martial
Glenn Hoddle says Anthony Martial is struggling with confidence due to being played out of position under Jose Mourinho.
The France international has struggled to hit the ground running under the new Manchester United manager in the 2016-17 season so far.
Martial has scored one goal and has made two assists in eight Premier League appearances since Mourinho replaced Louis van Gaal in May.
The 20-year-old enjoyed a whirlwind start to life as a Manchester United player following his £36m move to Old Trafford from Ligue 1 side Monaco in the 2015 summer transfer window.
Martial scored on his Premier League debut in Manchester United’s 3-1 win against Liverpool at Old Trafford in September 2015.
The France forward finished with 11 goals in 49 games in all competitions in the 2015-16 campaign.
Former Tottenham manager Hoddle explained why Martial is finding it so difficult to rekindle his prolific form this season.
“This year I think his movement has been lacking and his desire to get on the ball,” Hoddle told Unibet – as quoted by Metro.
“The lack of movement where he would take people away and check off so that then he can run at people and be destructive is not happening.
“Also, for me, when Manchester United build up down the right side, with his presence and physical size he’s not arriving in the penalty area in these goalscoring opportunities when the ball comes in.
“He’s hanging out too much and I think that’s a lack of confidence under Mourinho.”
