Ian Wright: Man United will regret not signing this Liverpool player
The Arsenal legend offers an explanation to why Manchester United didn't sign Liverpool star Sadio Mane
Ian Wright says Manchester United will be ruing their failure to sign Sadio Mane ahead of Liverpool.
The Senegal international was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United during Louis van Gaal’s spell in charge of the 20-time English champions.
The 24-year-old winger completed a £34m transfer to Liverpool from Premier League rivals Southampton in the summer transfer window.
Mane has scored six times and has made two assists in 10 Premier League appearances ahead of the African’s return to his former club on Saturday afternoon.
Manchester United have struggled for pace on the wings as Memphis Depay continues to struggle at Old Trafford following his £25m move from Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven in 2015.
Former Arsenal striker Wright explained why he felt Manchester United opted against signing the Senegal forward.
“He had a spell where he had a little bit of a sulk on,” Wright told The Sun Goals app.
“Ronald Koeman had to put him back in his box and make him realise that he has to play for the team. He got Mane going again. What you’ve seen at Liverpool – at a big club – is that he is a big time player. He has gone into that atmosphere and he is duck to water.
“He could probably have done the same at Manchester United. They’ll be looking at that and thinking he was one that got away, especially when you’ve got Memphis Depay.”
Mane was one of seven signings under Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after the Reds finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last term.
The African was the most expensive of the summer arrivals at Anfield.
