James Milner makes frank admission about his role in the Liverpool team
James Milner comments on his left-back role for Liverpool this season
James Milner has admitted that playing at left-back for Liverpool is not his favourite position.
The England international has regularly been deployed in the full-back role for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season as the German coach preferred to side with Milner rather than Alberto Moreno.
Milner has earned plenty of praise for his performances in the new role for Liverpool this season.
But although Milner admits that playing at left-back is not his favourite position, the Englishman says he is happy to do his job for the team this term under Klopp.
Speaking in an interview with Liverpool’s website, Milner said: “I am not going to turn around and lie and say ‘I love playing there’, but if that is me being part of a successful team and contributing then I will do anything I can for Liverpool.
“Ultimately, the team comes first. If that is what is best for the team then you do it. From that moment on, I was training left-back in pre-season and learning the position.
“He [Klopp] doesn’t owe me anything. I am a Liverpool player, he is the manager, he picks the best team to win and it is my job to make sure that what is best for Liverpool is me.”
Liverpool are currently second in the Premier League table after their goalless draw with Southampton last weekend.
The Reds finished eighth and without a trophy last season under Klopp despite reaching the Europa League and League Cup finals.
As a result, Liverpool do not have the distraction of European football this season.
