Jamie Carragher delivers glowing verdict on Premier League defender amid Man United link
The Liverpool legend speaks in glowing terms about reported Manchester United target Virgil van Dijk
Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on Southampton centre-half Virgin van Dijk after Liverpool’s stalemate at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.
The Netherlands international produced an impressive performance alongside European championship winner Jose Fonte as the Southampton defence managed to tame the most-prolific attack in the Premier League.
The Sunday People reported earlier in November that the former Celtic centre-half was a £30m target for Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho ahead of the January transfer window.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher spoke in glowing terms about the Dutch star after Van Dijk managed to keep a lid on Liverpool’s attacking trio of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
“The two centre-backs can go up against anyone in the league,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“Fonte is a top level player and Van Dijk has impressed everyone since he came here even though there were some doubts coming from Celtic. He looks like he has everything.”
Van Dijk moved to Premier League club Southampton from Scottish Premier League champions Celtic in 2015 when his compatriot Ronald Koeman was still in charge at St Mary’s.
Mourinho signed Ivory Coast international Eric Bailly in a £30m deal from La Liga side Villarreal in the summer transfer window.
However, the African suffered a serious knee injury during Manchester United’s 4-0 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League last month.
