Jamie Carragher delivers verdict on Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal signings
Jamie Carragher has his say on the current strength of the Arsenal squad
Jamie Carragher has insisted that he has been very impressed by Arsene Wenger’s recent signings for Arsenal.
The north London side have been criticised for failing to challenge for the top honours in recent seasons, with Wenger’s men not having won the Premier League title since the 2003-04 campaign.
Wenger led Arsenal to the FA Cup in the 2014 and 2015 seasons but the north Londoners have fallen short in the top flight and the Champions League in recent years.
The Frenchman guided Arsenal to three Premier League titles in his first few years at the club but the Gunners have not been able to win the top-flight trophy since their move to The Emirates from Highbury.
However, Carragher feels that Wenger has added wisely to his Arsenal side in recent years and gave his blessing to the north London club’s summer additions.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Carragher said: “Petr Cech, a title winner, is Arsenal’s goalkeeper. Shkodran Mustafi is a £35m central defender. Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez — combined cost £77.5m — lead their attack and they have a pair of full backs to match any in the league.
“This idea that Arsenal are the poor relations in terms of finance in the top four no longer carries weight.”
Arsenal finished second and without a trophy last season.
