Jamie Carragher reacts to Liverpool’s 0-0 draw at Southampton
The Liverpool legend is left to rue the Reds' lack of quality up front
Jamie Carragher has admitted that Liverpool showed a lack of quality up front after Saturday afternoon’s goalless draw at Southampton.
Liverpool failed to find the back of the net for just the second time this season as Brazil internationals Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino squandered good chances at St Mary’s.
Summer signing Joel Matip failed to find the back of the net in the second half despite the towering centre-half being offered two free headers in the Southampton area.
Liverpool are still the Premier League’s top goal-scorers after a return of 30 goals in 12 top-flight games under Jurgen Klopp’s management so far.
However, former Liverpool defender Carragher admitted it was a rare off day up front for the Merseyside club upon their return to the Premier League.
“For one of the first times this season there was a lack of quality in front of goal,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“Firmino’s was the standout chance, Matip could have done more – maybe been a bit braver from a fantastic [Philippe] Coutinho cross – and then Clyne at the back post.
“It felt that it all went the wrong side of the post for them today. Sometimes you have days like that.”
Liverpool are sitting at the top of the Premier League table on goal difference thanks to eight victories in 12 games.
The Reds finished in eighth place in the Premier League last term.
