Jamie Redknapp: I was so disappointed by this Man United player v Arsenal
Jamie Redknapp was not happy about Marcus Rashford's performance for Manchester United against Arsenal
Jamie Redknapp has admitted his disappointment about Marcus Rashford’s performance for Manchester United in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford.
The 19-year-old forward failed to produce his best display for the Red Devils as Juan Mata’s opener was cancelled out by Olivier Giroud’s late header in front of United’s home fans.
It marked a disappointing end to a game United will have felt they should have won given their dominance in the second half.
However, former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp was particularly disappointed by Rashford’s performance at Old Trafford against Arsenal.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “I was very critical of Marcus Rashford on Sky for his performance against Arsenal. I am a big fan of the 19-year-old but was so disappointed by his display.
“With Zlatan Ibrahimovic suspended, this was his big chance to shine. I was expecting fireworks from Rashford but instead there was a lack of movement.
“He was also at fault for Arsenal’s goal, letting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain run past him and cross for Olivier Giroud.
“When you are defending one-on-one you have to either show him inside where you have bodies or make sure you match his run if he goes down the line.
“This is a part of the game that Rashford must learn.”
Manchester United, who finished fifth and won the FA Cup last season, now turn their attentions back to Europa League affairs and their home clash with Feyenoord on Thursday night.
Jose Mourinho’s United are currently sixth in the Premier League table and nine points behind new leaders Chelsea after 12 games of the new season.
