Jamie Redknapp sends blunt warning to Tottenham about Harry Kane
Jamie Redknapp comments on Tottenham's situation regarding striker Harry Kane
Jamie Redknapp has warned Tottenham that they must give Harry Kane the big-money contract he deserves or face losing the striker.
The England international once again proved his worth to the north London side on Saturday evening when his quick-fire brace handed Spurs a valuable 3-2 win over West Ham United at White Hart Lane.
Kane is widely regarded to be one of the Premier League’s finest strikers and the forward is currently believed to be in talks about extending his current deal with the club.
However, Redknapp believes that Spurs are likely to have to break their tight wage structure if they want Kane to commit to a new deal at White Hart Lane.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “Tottenham have to pull out all the stops and give Harry Kane the big money he deserves.
“They have always maintained a wage ceiling and have never really gone to the level of Manchester City or Chelsea.
“It proves they are a well-run club but if they want to kick on, they need to keep hold of Kane. His two goals against West Ham are a reminder of just how important he is to Mauricio Pochettino’s team.
“Every side would love to have him.
“When I was at Liverpool, Robbie Fowler was the biggest earner. No-one had any complaints — there are players you accept are the kings.
“Kane is one of those players and if Spurs were to break their wage structure for him there would be no concerns among his team-mates.
“Tottenham have never pushed the boat out to tie down their star players such as Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Michael Carrick. This time it is different. With a new stadium on the horizon, this is the best position Tottenham have been in for years.
“This will be a real test of their ambition.
The Lilywhites are currently fifth in the Premier League and four points off top spot after 12 games.
