Jamie Redknapp: These four players key to Arsenal’s title bid
The former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder explains why Arsenal are genuine Premier League title contenders
Jamie Redknapp says Arsenal are genuine Premier League title contenders this season.
The Gunners have stuttered in recent weeks following successive 1-1 draws with title rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United to lose ground on pace-setters Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.
Arsenal have drawn three of their last four Premier League games but Arsene Wenger’s side remain unbeaten since a 4-3 defeat by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side in their opening fixture of the 2016-17 campaign.
The north London outfit signed Shkodran Mustafi, Granit Xhaka and Lucas Perez in big-money deals in the summer transfer window after a second-placed finish last term.
Former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp believes players such as Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny make Arsenal genuine Premier League title challengers.
“It has been such an unpredictable season so far. I said at the start of the year that there are seven or eight runners in the Premier League title race and I’ve not changed my mind. It’s very difficult to call, but Arsenal are definitely one of them,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“They look stronger. They have real game-changers in Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, and Olivier Giroud is looking like a good option off the bench.”
“The defence looks better than it’s ever looked, too. It was difficult to see them winning the league with Per Mertesacker in the team, but Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi look like the real deal.”
Arsenal will host Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira inspired Wenger’s side to the top-flight crown.
