Jan Molby: What I like about this clever Liverpool signing
The Liverpool explains why he is a big fan of Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum
Jan Molby has lavished praise on “clever” Liverpool signing Georginio Wijnaldum.
The Netherlands international moved to the Merseyside club in a £25m deal from relegated Premier League side Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.
Wijnaldum was the seventh of Jurgen Klopp’s signings in a summer of change at the Anfield outfit ahead of the 2016-17 Premier League campaign.
The Dutch midfielder made his Liverpool debut in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in their opening Premier League game of the season.
Wijnaldum started the Reds’ opening seven Premier League games before he suffered a hamstring injury during the international break in October.
The 25-year-old has since lost his starting spot to Germany international Emre Can, although he scored his first Liverpool goal in a 6-1 rout of Watford ahead of the international break.
Former Liverpool and Denmark international Molby explained what he really likes about Wijnaldum ahead of the Reds’ trip to Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
“Wijnaldum is a clever player,” Molby told Liverpool’s website. “I have always thought he was a really good player and he fits the way we want to play.
“He breaks the lines and he makes great runs forward. He has had more of a deeper role so far at Liverpool, but it doesn’t surprise me that he can play there.
“He is technically very good and the more you see of him, the more you like. He has an excellent goalscoring record from midfield.”
