Joel Matip issues Liverpool warning ahead of Sunderland clash
The Liverpool defender isn't underestimating Sunderland ahead of their Premier League clash on Saturday
Joel Matip has warned Jurgen Klopp’s players that Liverpool can ill-afford to underestimate Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.
The 18-time English champions will host the Premier League strugglers in their next top-flight game in front of their home supporters.
Liverpool will be looking to return to winning ways after the disappointment of a goalless draw with Southampton last time out.
Matip was guilty of wasting two opportunities to break the deadlock in the second half at a rain-drenched St Mary’s last weekend.
Liverpool can hoist themselves above Chelsea and into top spot with victory over the Black Cats ahead of the Blues’ home clash against title rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
However, Cameroon international Matip isn’t underestimating David Moyes’ Sunderland side despite the Black Cats’ well-documented struggles under the Scot this season.
Matip told Liverpool’s website: “There are no small clubs in the Premier League. Every team has a lot of quality.
“You can’t just go out, take it easy, collect the points and go home. You have to work hard every game and do your job. You have to earn it.”
Liverpool are in second place in the Premier League table and a point behind leaders Chelsea.
Matip moved to Liverpool in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 in the summer transfer window.
