John Aldridge delivers glowing verdict on Liverpool signing
The Liverpool legend has been very impressed with the performances of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren this season
John Aldridge has hailed Joel Matip’s impact in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool defence.
The Cameroon international helped the Merseyside outfit keep just their second clean sheet of the 2016-17 Premier League campaign at St Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.
Liverpool were forced to settle for a goalless draw with Southampton after the visitors wasted 15 opportunities to break the deadlock on the south coast.
Matip moved to the Reds on a free transfer from Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in the summer transfer window after Liverpool agreed terms with the centre-half in February.
And the African stepped into the Liverpool defence for their third Premier League game of the campaign as Klopp’s side battled to a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur.
Former Liverpool striker Aldridge has explained what has impressed him most about the towering 25-year-old defender.
“Joel Matip has been excellent since he came to Liverpool and he was very good again on Saturday,” Aldridge wrote in The Liverpool Echo.
“He just calms things down and is having a big influence. On the ball he is brilliant and in the air he is excellent.
“He and Lovren have got a good partnership going.
“Dejan got a hostile reception on Saturday but he ignored it. He played really well and that’s what you want to see. He has nothing to prove.
“Teams do what Southampton tried all the time – they used a defensive set up and tried to hit us on the break and take all three points. But we got a clean sheet and I thought we defended really well.”
Liverpool are in second place in the Premier League table and a point adrift of leaders Chelsea in the Premier League title race.
The Reds will host Sunderland in their next Premier League fixture on Saturday evening.
