Jordan Henderson: This Liverpool fact about Emre Can blew me away
The Liverpool captain was surprised to learn that Emre Can has already made over 100 Reds appearances
Jordan Henderson says he can’t believe that Emre Can has already made over 100 appearances in his Liverpool career.
The Germany international reached the milestone in Liverpool’s goalless draw with Southampton at St Mary’s in the Premier League last weekend.
The Reds signed the versatile midfielder from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 under Jurgen Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers.
The Northern Irishman utilised Can in a number of different roles in his Liverpool team, including at right-back and centre-half.
However, the 22-year-old has really come into his own under compatriot Klopp following the charismatic manager’s appointment back in October 2015.
Speaking to This Is Anfield – as quoted by Liverpool’s website ahead of their clash against Sunderland on Saturday afternoon, Henderson admitted he was surprised to learn how many appearances Can has already made for the Reds.
“Someone told me after the game at St Mary’s that it was Emre Can’s 100th appearance for Liverpool. That blew me away – it’s incredible how quickly that 100 games has come around and it shows what an important player he is for us.
“Emre’s a cracking lad with a brilliant attitude. What a talent as well. I think we forget sometimes just how young he is, because he acts and plays with such maturity.
“He’s still only 22 years old and I have to pinch myself to believe he was only 20 when he first joined us. I’m looking forward to his next 100 games for us and the next 100 after that hopefully as well.”
England international Henderson was named as club legend Steven Gerrard’s permanent successor as captain in 2015.
Liverpool signed Henderson in a reported £20m deal from Sunderland in 2011 under ex Reds manager Kenny Dalglish.
