Jose Mourinho: I told Man United signing why he couldn’t play against Arsenal
Jose Mourinho delivers the latest update on Manchester United playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Jose Mourinho has revealed that he opted not to start Henrikh Mkhitaryan against Arsenal for Manchester United at the weekend because he didn’t feel that the playmaker was ready to cope with the pressure.
The Armenia international has found his first team opportunities severely limited this season since his arrival at the club from Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window.
Indeed, Mkhitaryan has only made six appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils so far this season and was not involved during the 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford.
However, Mourinho has hinted that the playmaker could be involved when United take on Dutch side Feyenoord in the Europa League on Thursday night at Old Trafford.
And the Portuguese coach has lifted the lid on how why he opted not to call on the summer signing against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Speaking in an interview with United’s website, Mourinho said: “I told him ‘this was not the game for you’ because I don’t think he needs 10 or 20 minutes from the bench.
“I said ‘I think you need a good game and you need to either start or, if not, to come for the second half’.
“He needs less pressure and better conditions for him to express his qualities.”
