Liverpool legend praises Jurgen Klopp’s approach to title race
Jan Molby is happy to see Jurgen Klopp play down talk of Liverpool winning the Premier League
Jan Molby believes Jurgen Klopp is adopting the right stance amid growing talk of Liverpool winning the Premier League title.
The Reds are a point clear of second-placed Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table after a 6-1 win against Watford at Anfield in their last game before the international break.
The Merseyside outfit are second favourites to win the top-flight crown behind Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City after an impressive start to the 2016-17 season.
However, Liverpool have scored more goals than the Citizens after finding the net 30 times in 11 Premier League games so far.
Klopp, though, has been keen to play down talk of Liverpool winning a first Premier League title this season despite his players’ eye-catching start.
Former Reds midfielder Molby believes this is the right approach given that Klopp doesn’t know if the Liverpool squad can maintain their intensity throughout the campaign.
“The win took us to the top, but Jurgen Klopp is right to just calm everyone down, still. It won’t just be for the media, either – he’ll be saying the same in the dressing room as well,” Molby wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“I know it’s boring but there are a lot of games to go, he doesn’t know what reaction he will get from his squad with a full season.
“He’s got them to the level of fitness but doesn’t know the reaction that will bring throughout the season as games possibly pile up.
“It’s difficult to say what will happen, you don’t quite know how other teams will do and Klopp will be thinking it’s 26 years since the last title, so he’s right to take one game at a time.
“In his words: they’re in a good moment, and have to stay in it.”
Liverpool will make the trip to Southampton in their next Premier League game on Saturday 19 November.
