Liverpool signing thanks Dejan Lovren for help
Joel Matip singles out Liverpool centre-half Dejan Lovren for praise
Joel Matip says Dejan Lovren has helped the Liverpool signing settle in Jurgen Klopp’s defence.
The Cameroon international helped the Merseyside outfit keep their second clean sheet of the 2016-17 Premier League season as the Reds played out a disappointing goalless draw with Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
Liverpool were bumped down to second place a day later after Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side were 1-0 winners against Middlesbrough and managed to hoist themselves above their title rivals.
Matip moved to Liverpool in a free transfer from Bundesliga side Schalke in the summer as Klopp bolstered his defensive options following an eighth-place finish last term.
The African defender has helped Liverpool keep clean sheets against Manchester United and Southampton in the Premier League campaign so far.
And Lovren diverted praise to his centre-half partner Lovren after Saturday’s stalemate at St Mary’s.
“He [Lovren] did very well for the whole 95 minutes and played a wonderful game,” Matip told Liverpool’s website.
“He always helps me and he did well.”
Matip scored his first Liverpool goal in a 4-2 victory at Crystal Palace last month.
The Reds will host Sunderland at Anfield in their next Premier League game next Saturday.
