Mark Lawrenson states prediction for Man United v Arsenal
The Liverpool legend is backing Manchester United to hold Arsenal to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon
Mark Lawrenson is backing Manchester United to avoid a defeat when Jose Mourinho’s side host Arsenal at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils ended a four-game winless run in the Premier League before the international break thanks to a 3-1 victory over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.
However, Manchester United are eight points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool after 11 top-flight games under Louis van Gaal’s replacement, Mourinho.
Arsenal, on the other hand, played out a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby in their last Premier League game before the international break.
The Gunners haven’t won at Old Trafford since 2006 when Emmaneul Adebayor scored an 86th-minute winner against Manchester United to seal three points.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes Arsenal will have to settle for a point against Mourinho’s Red Devils side at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
“Manchester United cannot afford to lose this game and their manager Jose Mourinho will set his team up accordingly,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“His main aim will be to avoid losing, which is the Mourinho way. I am not expecting to see a really attack-minded United side, put it that way.
“Since they lost to Liverpool on the opening day of the Premier League season, Arsenal have not lost in 16 games in all competitions.
“The Gunners are in excellent form, while United have been inconsistent, but a draw at Old Trafford would still be a good result for Arsene Wenger’s side.”
Manchester United appointed Mourinho as Van Gaal’s successor in May after the Red Devils finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season.
