Paul Merson accuses Arsene Wenger of papering over Arsenal cracks
The Gunners legend says there is something amiss about Arsenal
Paul Merson says Arsene Wenger is papering over the cracks after Arsenal’s stuttering form in recent weeks.
The Gunners drew 1-1 with bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby at The Emirates at the start of November.
Arsenal managed to rescue a 1-1 draw with title contenders Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend after substitute Olivier Giroud scored a late equaliser at Old Trafford.
Wenger’s side squandered a second-half lead after coming from behind to draw 2-2 with Ligue 1 holders Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night, handing control of Champions League Group A to the French side.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson has doubts over Wenger’s side ahead of the visit of Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
“Same old Arsenal. They have been papering over the cracks for weeks and now they’re going to finish second in their Champions League group again,” Merson wrote in his Daily Star column.
“Yes they’re unbeaten in 18 games but you have to start winning football matches. Draws are no good.
“There’s something missing, they don’t look fluent. But Arsene Wenger just gives his players excuses. He must tell them they’re tired so much they’re starting to believe it.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season and 10 points adrift of champions Leicester City.
The Gunners haven’t won the top-flight crown since 2003-04 when Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira inspired the Gunners to glory.
