Paul Merson predicts Arsenal v Tottenham north London derby
Paul Merson states his prediction for Arsenal's showdown with Tottenham at The Emirates on Sunday
Paul Merson believes that Arsenal will be able to beat Tottenham on Sunday as long as they work hard at The Emirates.
The Gunners head into the game having earned plenty of praise for their recent performances in all competitions and fresh from having booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Arsenal have been one of the Premier League’s most consistent teams so far this season and have not lost in the top flight since their opening weekend defeat at the hands of Liverpool at The Emirates.
Spurs, on the other hand, are without a win in three games in the Premier League and lost 1-0 to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
And former Arsenal star Merson is tipping the Gunners to have the edge over their struggling local rivals at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
Writing in his column for The Daily Star, Merson said: “They should play to their strengths and get the ball forward to him as quickly as possible. But Arsenal just need to work as hard as Leverkusen and Liverpool did against them this season and they will win the game.
“Liverpool caused them all sorts of problems when they pressed the ball. Spurs couldn’t handle it, and they won’t be able to if Arsenal do it. It’s been a while since Tottenham won a game.
“Lose this one and it’s seven without a win. That’s a lot for a team that wants to win things. Without Kane they have struggled for goals. Vincent Janssen doesn’t look up to it. Son has gone off the boil. Where do the goals come from?
“Dele Alli is still only 20. You can’t rely on him every week. But if Christian Eriksen isn’t making things happen either, who is? Look at Arsenal. They have a lot more firepower.
“If Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil aren’t doing it, Theo Walcott, Olivier Giroud or even Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are.”
