Paul Merson: These Tottenham signings were panic buys
The Arsenal legend delivers verdict on Tottenham signings Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko
Paul Merson has branded Tottenham Hotspur signings Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko as panic buys.
The Netherlands international moved to the Lilywhites in a £19m deal from Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar in the summer transfer window.
Janssen arrived at White Hart Lane after the 21-year-old centre-forward scored 27 times in 33 appearances in the Dutch top flight last term.
Sissoko, meanwhile, completed a £30m switch to Tottenham from relegated Newcastle United after a forgettable campaign at St James’s Park.
However, Tottenham’s club-record signing has struggled to have an impact in Mauricio Pochettino’s side so far this season.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson delivered a blunt verdict on Pochettino’s summer signings.
“Pochettino says they need more quality but look what he bought in the window. Moussa Sissoko was a panic buy and he’s not been very good. Neither has Vincent Janssen,” Merson wrote in his Daily Star column.
“I think Pochettino can see they are a way off and knows he needs a few more players. He was laying down a marker.”
Tottenham finished in third place in the Premier League table after challenging eventual champions Leicester City for the title throughout much of the season.
Spurs signed Kenya international Victor Wanyama in an £11m deal from Premier League rivals Southampton in the summer transfer window.
Tottenham were eliminated from the Champions League last week after a 2-1 defeat by Ligue 1 side AS Monaco.
