The north London side returned to winning ways in the top flight thanks to goals from Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott to keep them in fourth place in the table.

Sanchez opened the scoring before Walcott made it 2-1 with a header shortly after half-time.

And man of the match Sanchez then made the points secure when he tapped home Olivier Giroud’s low pass late on to wrap up the win.

The victory moved Arsenal up to fourth place and left them three points behind leaders Chelsea after 13 games of the new season.

And Mertesacker used his personal Twitter account to congratulate his team-mates after the game.

The German tweeted:

Arsenal now turn their attentions back towards League Cup affairs and their clash against Southampton in the quarter-finals on Wednesday night.
