Rio Ferdinand: This is how much Harry Kane should be earning at Tottenham
The Manchester United legend says Harry Kane should be demanding £220,000-a-week at Tottenham Hotspur
Rio Ferdinand believes Harry Kane should be asking Tottenham Hotspur to match Sergio Aguero’s wages at Manchester City.
The England international is thought to be in negotiations with the north London club over a new contract amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future.
Kane is believed to be earning in the region of £60,000-a-week at the White Hart Lane club, which is significantly less than Tottenham’s best-paid players.
The Lilywhites managed to end their four-game winless run in the Premier League thanks to Kane’s double in a 3-2 victory over West Ham United on Saturday evening.
Kane has already scored five times in seven Premier League appearances despite enduring an injury-hit start to the 2016-17 season.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand believes Kane should be looking to secure a new deal worth around £220,000-a-week.
“If I was him, I’d be demanding to be on the same level as Sergio Aguero, who has a package of about £220,000 including bonuses, instead,” Ferdinand told The London Evening Standard.
“That’s the kind of player he should be looking for parity with. Like Aguero, Kane has been banging the goals in for a few years. That’s his level.
“I think Kane is weakening his own position if he uses Vardy and Sturridge as a starting point because they’re not the same calibre of player. He is only 23 and the other two don’t match up with him in terms of games played and goals scored.
“I’m sure this is the last thing Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will want to hear. I understand that he is a businessman and wants keep a strict wage structure at the club. But we are not talking about any player — we are talking about a striker who guarantees you more than 20 goals a season.”
Tottenham are in fifth place in the Premier League table and four points adrift of Premier League leaders Chelsea.
