Robbie Savage leaps to the defence of Arsenal star Mesut Ozil
Robbie Savage singles out Mesut Ozil for special praise after his strong start to the season with Arsenal
Robbie Savage has singled out Mesut Ozil for special praise following his strong start to the season for Arsenal.
The Germany playmaker has earned a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most exciting attacking players since his arrival at the club from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.
Ozil notched up more assists than any other player in the Premier League last season as Arsenal ended up in second place in the table.
The 28-year-old has had his fair share of criticism since his arrival at the club, with many still doubting his ability to produce consistent performances for Arsenal.
However, former midfielder Savage has revealed that he is a huge admirer of the Arsenal playmaker.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mirror, Savage said: “It’s a bit harsh to call Ozil a Real Madrid reject when his stats put him up there with the best providers of assists in TWO of the toughest divisions in the world, La Liga and the Premier League.
“He didn’t have his best game in the north London derby, but he was still instrumental in Arsenal’s goal.
“And the Gunners didn’t depend on Spurs messing up at the death to nick runners-up in the title race last season – it’s a 38-game campaign, not just a bunch sprint in the last few weeks.”
Ozil will be hoping to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Premier League action next weekend with a tricky trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.
