Steve McManaman sends warning to Liverpool about Philippe Coutinho
Steve McManaman has his say about Philippe Coutinho's Liverpool injury
Steve McManaman has admitted that Philippe Coutinho’s injury will be a big blow to Liverpool – but insists that the Reds should not be too dependant on a single player.
The Brazilian playmaker was carried off on a stretcher in the first half of the Reds’ 2-0 win over Sunderland in the Premier League at Anfield on Saturday after suffering what looked to be a nasty ankle injury.
It is not yet known how long Coutinho will be sidelined for but the Brazilian is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s top attacking talents.
Former Liverpool star McManaman admits that the Brazilian’s absence will be a blow to Jurgen Klopp’s side.
However, he also stressed that the Reds cannot become too dependant on one player if they want to establish themselves as genuine Premier League contenders this season.
Speaking on BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show, McManaman said: “He’ll be a big miss, but if you’re relying on one player to stay fit all season, you’re never going to win the league.
“[Liverpool] don’t have the deepest of squads but they’ve still got the quality.”
Saturday’s win left Liverpool second and a point behind leaders Chelsea after 13 games.
