Steve McManaman urges Jurgen Klopp to make Liverpool signings in January
The former Liverpool skipper believes Jurgen Klopp needs to make some timely additions in the January transfer window
Steve McManaman believes Jurgen Klopp needs to sign some players to bolster Liverpool’s title bid in the January transfer window.
The Reds were 2-0 winners against Premier League strugglers Sunderland at Anfield on Saturday afternoon thanks to goals from Divock Origi and James Milner.
However, Liverpool’s victory came at a cost, after Philippe Coutinho was taken off on a stretcher with an ankle injury in the 33rd minute on Merseyside.
The 18-time English champions will also be without Senegal international Sadio Mane in January and February when the forward travels to the Africa Cup of Nations.
Liverpool are in second place in the Premier League table and a point behind leaders Chelsea after the Blues were 2-1 winners against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
Speaking to BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show, McManaman explained why Klopp needs to make some additions in the January transfer window.
“You look at that run of fixtures that Liverpool have got, with the January transfer window coming up,” McManaman said.
“Mane’s going to the African Cup of Nations and maybe [Joel] Matip [too].
“They’ve got time, if they want to, to bring in players in January. But [even if they don’t] Liverpool should be strong enough to cope.”
Klopp signed seven players in the summer transfer window, including the £34m acquisition of Mane from Premier League rivals Southampton.
