Thierry Henry makes bold prediction about Arsenal signing
The Arsenal legend is confident Granit Xhaka will develop into a regular starter under Arsene Wenger
Thierry Henry believes Granit Xhaka will become “the guy” in Arsenal’s midfielder in future seasons.
The Switzerland international moved to the Gunners in a £33m deal from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer transfer window.
Xhaka was one of five summer signings as manager Arsene Wenger looked to transform his squad into Premier League winners after 12 years of disappointment.
However, the 23-year-old has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in the Arsenal manager’s side despite his big-money move from the Bundesliga.
Xhaka has started just six of the north London side’s 13 Premier League games in the 2016-17 campaign so far.
Former Arsenal striker Henry is confident, though, that Xhaka will have a big role to play in the London outfit’s long-term future.
“It’s a weird one. Arsenal bought him, so I was expecting him to start – maybe not every single game at the beginning because he has to adapt to the league – but I think that he was going to be ‘the guy’ in midfield,” Henry told Sky Sports ahead of Arsenal’s 3-1 win against Bournemouth.
“Arsene says himself that he will only bring in a player who can make his team play better. He doesn’t look like he’s a starter yet, but hopefully he can be one.”
Xhaka started Arsenal’s 3-1 win against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners are in fourth place in the English top flight and three points behind current leaders Chelsea.
Arsenal will host Southampton in their EFL Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night.
