Alan Shearer praises Arsenal’s direct approach after 1-0 win over West Brom

The former Newcastle United striker has his say on Arsenal's tactics after their Boxing Day victory

Alan Shearer has praised Arsenal’s ability to grind out victories after their 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion on Boxing Day.

The Gunners have been in poor form in the Premier League in recent weeks following successive 2-1 losses to Everton and Manchester City in recent weeks.

Arsenal had the chance to kick-start their Premier League title bid on Boxing Day ahead of the visit of Tony Pulis’ resilient West Brom side.

However, the north London outfit struggled to make the breakthrough in the first half and the Gunners ditched their passing game in favour of a more direct approach towards the end of the Premier League clash.

And the move paid dividends after Mesut Ozil’s cross teed up Olivier Giroud to guide a header past West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster with four minutes remaining at the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking to Match Of The Day following Arsenal’s close-fought win, Shearer praised the Gunners for their direct approach which led to their last-gasp winner.

“Not for the first time this season, you’ve seen Arsenal score late,” Shearer said.

“They got three points [against West Brom] and a point at Old Trafford. If it’s not working in terms of passing their way through a team, they put it in the box and it worked [against West Brom].”
