Alan Shearer: This Chelsea star worth 12 points for Antonio Conte in title race
The Match of the Day pundits believes Thibaut Courtois deserves some credit for Chelsea's 10-game winning run
Alan Shearer believes Thibaut Courtois will earn Chelsea between nine and 12 points in the Premier League title race this season.
The Belgium international produced a commanding performance at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night as Chelsea eased to a tenth successive Premier League win thanks to a 1-0 victory over the Black Cats.
Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas scored the winner in the first half on just his third Premier League start of the season thanks to a composed finish which beat Sunderland shot stopper Jordan Pickford.
Courtois managed to keep Sunderland out in the first half before the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper produced an incredible save to deny Patrick van Aanholt in the closing moments of the match.
Speaking to Match of the Day on Wednesday night after Chelsea’s latest Premier League victory, former Newcastle striker Shearer singled out Courtois for special praise.
“I think a goalkeeper will win you at least nine to 12 points over the course of the season. It’s eight clean sheets in 10 games this season,” Shearer said.
“When you consider we’ve spoken a lot about Costa, Hazard, Pedro and Moses this season, the guy who hasn’t had a big mention is Courtois. He played his part with two unbelievable saves.”
Chelsea are six points clear of second-placed Liverpool and Arsenal in the Premier League title race after their tenth successive top-flight win.
