Alex Iwobi sends message to Arsenal star Mesut Ozil
Alex Iwobi hailed Mesut Ozil after the German set up his goal in Arsenal's 4-1 win over Basel
Alex Iwobi paid tribute to Mesut Ozil after the German playmaker set up his goal in Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The Nigeria international scored his first goal of the season as he tapped home Ozil’s cross in the second half to help Arsene Wenger’s men top their Champions League group.
Iwobi has been a regular fixture in the Arsenal team this season but has been made to wait for his first strike of the campaign.
And the 20-year-old midfielder was clearly delighted to finally get on the score-sheet on Tuesday night.
Speaking in an interview with Arsenal’s website after the game, Iwobi said: “I wouldn’t say my goal was a cracker but it was a great assist by Mesut.
“It’s felt like a long time coming and it’s always a great feeling to score a goal, but I’m just pleased with the team¹s performance and that we were able to finish top of the group.
“Having a second leg at home is a big advantage [in the knockout stage] and it gives you the belief that you can do it. However, the Champions League is full of top teams.”
Both Iwobi and Ozil will be hoping to feature for Arsenal when the north London side return to Premier League action with a home clash against Stoke City on Saturday.
