Antonio Conte: Why I’m really pleased for Chelsea striker Diego Costa
The Chelsea manager heaps praise on Diego Costa after his brilliant start to the 2016-17 season
Antonio Conte has hailed Diego Costa’s attitude after the Chelsea striker’s impressive start to the 2016-17 season.
The new Blues manager has managed to rekindle some world-class form from his controversial centre-forward following the Italian’s appointment as Guus Hiddink’s successor earlier this year.
Costa scored 20 times in 26 Premier League games as the Spanish forward fired Chelsea to the 2014-15 Premier League title in his first season in English football.
Chelsea signed the Brazilian-born forward in a £32m deal from La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid in 2014 under ex manager Jose Mourinho.
However, Costa struggled in his second season in the Premier League after he netted 12 times in 28 top-flight games as Chelsea finished in tenth place.
But Conte has managed to restore Costa’s confidence and form after the striker scored 10 times in the opening 13 Premier League games of the 2016-17 season.
Speaking at his pre-match media confernece ahead of Chelsea’s clash against Manchester City on Friday, Conte said:
“I’m pleased for him. Diego is showing great respect and passion in the right way during these games.
“It’s fantastic for him because sometimes you can think that all of the people. It’s fantastic for him, his team-mates, me and the club. Also it’s great to talk about Diego in a positive way and not a bad way. I remember at the start of the season the only questions [were negative].”
Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last season.
