Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger responds to Man United transfer rumours

Arsene Wenger insists that Manchester United did not ever make an official bid to sign Mathieu Debuchy from Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has denied that Manchester United ever made a bid to try and sign Mathieu Debuchy from Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

The right-back has found his first-team opportunities at The Emirates severely restricted in recent months after falling behind Hector Bellerin in the pecking order at Arsenal.

Debuchy’s lack of first-team football has inevitably prompted suggestions that his future at Arsenal could be in doubt.

It was reported earlier this year that Manchester United were interested in signing the France international, and Debuchy was quoted in February as saying that the Gunners blocked a potential move to Old Trafford.

However, Wenger has hit back at those reports by insisting that the Red Devils never tabled an official bid for the defender.

Asked about the claims that Debuchy was blocked from going to Manchester United, Wenger told Arsenal’s website: “They have never made an offer for him. It’s completely untrue.

“It’s sometimes surprising to hear things like that.”
