Arsenal legend: I hate the way people treat Mesut Ozil

Ian Wright is tired of Arsenal club-record signing Mesut Ozil getting stick

Ian Wright has blasted Mesut Ozil’s critics after admitting that he is tired of people giving the Arsenal midfielder stick.

The Germany international produced a disappointing performance as the north London side saw their 14-game unbeaten record come to an end in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

Irish defender Seamus Coleman cancelled out Alexis Sanchez’s deflected free-kick before Ashley Williams scored a headed winner in the final minutes of the top-flight clash.

Ozil has scored five times and has made two assists in 15 Premier League games this season as the World Cup winner continues to contribute to Arsenal’s title push.

However, there is still scepticism surrounding Ozil’s performances in Arsene Wenger’s side despite his impressive stats since moving to Arsenal in a £42.5m deal from Real Madrid in 2013.

Former Arsenal striker Wright is unhappy with persistent abuse of Ozil in recent seasons ahead of the Gunners’ trip to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

“I saw Mesut Ozil getting a lot of stick. I hate the way people treat him – especially other fans, who I don’t expect anything different from. When he does well, they slaughter him,” Wright told The Sun Goals podcast.

“‘He’s a World Cup winner, he should be scoring hat-tricks etc’. When he doesn’t do well, ‘he’s a waste of money.’

“I’m tired of it.”

Arsenal are in third place in the Premier League table.
