Arsenal legend issues Man United warning to Jose Mourinho ahead of January transfer window
Alan Smith believes Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho will struggle to add quality to his squad in the summer transfer window
Jose Mourinho will find it difficult to add quality signings to his Manchester United squad in the January transfer window, according to Alan Smith.
The Red Devils boss has struggled to revive Manchester United in the 2016-17 Premier League campaign after a run of five victories in 13 top-flight fixtures so far.
The 20-time English champions have managed to record two victories in their last 10 Premier League games after a 1-1 draw with West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Mourinho spent over £150m on new signings in the summer transfer window after he added Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba to his squad.
While Smith believes the Manchester United manager could do with one or two signings in the January transfer window, the Arsenal legend warned the former Chelsea boss that he will struggle to make quality additions.
“They’ve spent big money [in the summer] and in January it is notoriously difficult to spend it again,” Smith told Sky Sports News on Monday. “He could bring in one or two but I think that the core of his squad he’ll have to work with and try to get the best out of them.”
Manchester United are a staggering 11 points behind Mourinho’s former club Chelsea in the Premier League title race.
