Arsenal legend questions impact of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez

Ian Wright is disappointed Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez have been unable to lift the level of their Arsenal team-mates

Ian Wright admits that he is disappointed Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez have failed to elevate the performances of their team-mates like Dennis Bergkamp managed to do during the Dutch forward’s spell at Arsenal.

The Gunners suffered a 2-1 loss to title rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon after goals from Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling cancelled out Theo Walcott’s first-half opener.

Arsenal have lost their last two Premier League games after a 2-1 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park despite Sanchez’s first-half free-kick to break the deadlock on the blue half of Merseyside.

The Chile international has scored 12 times in 17 Premier League appearances in the current season, while Ozil has netted five times in Arsenal’s top-flight campaign.

However, Wright highlighted the impact that Bergkamp had on Wenger’s players during his 11-year stay at the north London club, adding that Ozil and Sanchez need to replicate the Dutch legend’s ability to improve the performances of his team-mates.

“When Dennis came because of his world-class technical play, everybody raised their game. You saw what happened with us. It’s not happening at Arsenal at the moment,” Wright told BBC’s 606 podcast.
