Arsenal legend warns Antonio Conte: Chelsea are too reliant on Diego Costa
Alan Smith delivers honest verdict on Chelsea's over reliance on Diego Costa
Alan Smith believes Chelsea have become too reliant on Diego Costa in the Premier League title race.
The Spain international scored the west London side’s first-half winner in Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues are sitting at the top of the Premier League table and six points ahead of their closest rivals Liverpool ahead of their home clash against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day.
Costa has scored 13 times in 17 Premier League games in the current campaign, hoisting the Blues clear of their title rivals.
However, the 28-year-old centre-forward will miss their Boxing Day clash against the Cherries due to suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season during their 1-0 win at Palace.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ on Wednesday afternoon, former Arsenal striker Smith delivered his verdict on Chelsea’s over reliance on Costa.
“There is a danger [of over reliance],” Smith said.
“If they were to lose him for any length of time and not a one-match suspension, they might struggle. Not just for his goals but the way he leads the line. He is very intelligent linking up the play.”
Chelsea have won their last 11 Premier League games, including victories over Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
