Arsene Wenger admits Alexis Sanchez has proved him wrong at Arsenal
Arsene Wenger discusses Alexis Sanchez's switch of positions for Arsenal this season
Arsene Wenger has admitted that he was not fully convinced that Alexis Sanchez could play in a central striking role for Arsenal before this season.
The Chile international has been deployed up front for the north London side for most of this campaign and he has been in fine form for the Gunners.
Sanchez has already scored more than 10 Premier League goals for the Gunners to help them keep pace with Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table.
The 27-year-old has largely played on the wing for Arsenal following his transfer to the club from Barcelona back in the summer of 2014.
However, Wenger says that he has been pleasantly surprised by Sanchez’s ability to play up front for the Gunners this term.
Speaking to Arsenal’s website before Saturday’s clash with Stoke City, Wenger said: “He has developed very well as a centre forward because he has found a good mixture between coming short and going in behind,” Wenger said. “He has more freedom as well and he takes advantage of his short technique in the middle much more.
“I always saw that in Alexis and I must honestly say that when I played him there last year or two years ago I was wrong.
“The times I tried him through the middle were not convincing and I even remember against Everton I changed it at half-time.”
Arsenal will now turn their attentions towards preparing for their clash with Everton next week in the top flight.
