Arsene Wenger has been handed an early Christmas present after Alexis Sanchez was left out of the Chile squad for the China Cup in January.

The forward has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season and has already hit 12 goals and made five assists in the top flight for the Gunners to help them challenge for the title.

Sanchez suffered a muscular injury at around this time last year ahead of Arsenal’s hectic schedule in the Premier League and the news that the 27-year-old has not been included in the China Cup squad will be a relief for the Gunners boss.

The Chilean FA confirmed the national team’s involvement in the inaugural competition last month and it was not clear whether the likes of Sanchez would be called up.

However, the Arsenal forward has been omitted and the news is likely to please Wenger ahead of the Gunners’ trip to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
