Arsene Wenger delivers brutally honest assessment of Arsenal ahead of West Ham trip
The Arsenal manager was not at all happy with what he saw from his side against Southampton
Arsene Wenger has admitted that his Arsenal team were not up to scratch during Wednesday night’s 2-0 loss to Southampton in the EFL Cup.
The Gunners failed to click into gear as they were comfortably beaten by the visitors at The Emirates in a defeat which ended Arsenal’s 19-game unbeaten run in all competitions since the opening weekend of the season.
Wenger is not known for criticising his players publicly after games, but the Frenchman was clearly not happy about his side’s below-par display against the Saints in front of their home fans.
The north London side must now dust themselves down and prepare for their Premier League trip to West Ham on Saturday night.
And Wenger admitted that he was less than impressed by his side’s attitude against Southampton on Wednesday night.
Speaking to Arsenal’s website, Wenger said: “It’s not only a disappointing night because we are out, but it’s a disappointing night because the performance was disappointing.
“I question our urgency level, our focus from the start on. It was not good enough and we paid for that.
“Overall, I think that is the most disappointing. It can happen that you go out of the competition, but our first 45 minutes were just not good enough and not at the level of required concentration.
“In the second half we responded well, but overall for me, that’s the most disappointing.”
Arsenal are currently fourth in the Premier League and three points behind leaders Chelsea.
