Arsene Wenger makes bold claim about Carl Jenkinson at Arsenal
Arsene Wenger is expecting big things from Carl Jenkinson at Arsenal...
Arsene Wenger has claimed that Carl Jenkinson has what it takes to compete with Hector Bellerin and become one of the best right-backs in Europe at Arsenal.
Bellerin has earned a reputation as one of the continent’s strongest full-backs since breaking into the Arsenal team a couple of years ago.
The Spaniard has been rewarded for his fine form with a new contract at Arsenal as he opted to commit his future to the north London club.
Jenkinson is currently working his way up to full fitness at The Emirates after only recently returning to action from a serious knee injury.
The Englishman was out on loan to West Ham last season before his spell in east London was cut short by the injury.
Now, Wenger has challenged the full-back to step his game up and start to challenge Bellerin for a regular spot in the Arsenal team.
Speaking in an interview with Arsenal’s website, Wenger said: “Bellerin is one of the best in his position certainly in Europe, but Carl can compete with him.
“At the moment, no, because mentally he has not found back his total level nor his confidence.”
He continued: “Jenkinson has not played for a long, long period.
“He had knee surgery after he had two shoulder surgeries and what he is going through at the moment is, for me, a bit normal but very difficult to live with for a player. Why? Because you think you are there and you will only realise in six months that he is not completely there.
“And then you will play and realise you are not as good as you think you should be and you lose confidence. He is going through that period at the moment.”
