Chelsea midfielder 50-50 to leave in January transfer window, says agent
John Obi Mikel could stay at Chelsea beyond the January transfer window, according to his agent
John Obi Mikel could stay at Chelsea beyond the January transfer window despite his lack of first-team football, according to his agent.
The Nigeria international has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge after being out of favour under new manager Antonio Conte.
The experienced Premier League midfielder hasn’t made an appearance in the Italian’s squad since Conte took over the reins of the west London club in the summer.
Mikel has been linked with a move to Chelsea’s title rivals Manchester United, where ex-Blues boss Jose Mourinho is currently in charge.
However, the midfielder’s agent John Shittu has revealed that Mikel has discussed his Chelsea future with Conte with six months to run on his current Blues deal.
And the Nigerian’s representative has left the door open to Mikel staying at Stamford Bridge beyond the January transfer window.
“Obi Mikel and Antonio have been speaking,” Shittu told Goal.
“The manager, club and player have been talking. So I am not in a position to tell about what they have been speaking about, in the next few weeks things should be clearer.
“We have been having meeting with a few parties who are interested in him, once we are able to agree the way forward with Chelsea, then we will take it from there.
“There are a few clubs in Europe and Asia, they are numerous and are interested in him because he is a quality player, aged only 29, and we just have to speak, so we will see. A lot of interest is there.
“There is no decision made yet and it is still 50/50 whether he will sign or leave. A lot can happen in the next months, never say never in football.”
Chelsea are a point ahead of second-placed Liverpool in the Premier League title race ahead of their trip to Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.
