Mark Lawrenson states prediction for Chelsea v Stoke
The former Liverpool defender can't see past another Chelsea win on New Year's Eve
Mark Lawrenson admits he can’t envisage anything other than a Chelsea win on New Year’s Eve when Stoke City make the trip to Stamford Bridge.
Antonio Conte’s side are in imperious form in the Premier League after a run of 12 successive top-flight victories since a 3-0 loss at Arsenal in September.
The west London outfit eased to a 3-0 victory over Bournemouth on Boxing Day courtesy of goals either side of half-time from Pedro Rodriguez and Eden Hazard’s penalty.
Stoke, on the other hand, suffered a resounding 4-1 loss to Chelsea’s title rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday evening despite Jonathan Walters breaking the deadlock in the first half.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson is confident that Chelsea will get the job done against the Potters and make it 13 successive Premier League victories on Saturday afternoon.
“Stoke seem to be making a lot of defensive mistakes which is very un-Stoke like,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“The Potters scored first against Liverpool on Tuesday but contributed to their own downfall after that, and the way they are shipping goals is a real worry.
“Now Stoke have to play leaders Chelsea, who will have Diego Costa and N’Golo Kante back from suspension. It is hard to see them holding out at Stamford Bridge.”
Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last season under Jose Mourinho and his interim successor Guus Hiddink.
The Blues signed five players in the summer transfer window.
