Danny Murphy: This Man United midfielder has given Jose Mourinho a headache
The former Liverpool midfielder heaps praise on Manchester United starlet Jesse Lingard
Jesse Lingard has given Jose Mourinho a headache ahead of Manchester United’s home clash against Sunderland on Boxing Day, according to Danny Murphy.
The England midfielder was restored to Mourinho’s line-up for their trip to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday evening as Lingard made just his eighth start of the 2016-17 Premier League season.
Lingard repaid his manager’s faith after the 24-year-old’s cross teed up veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic to break the deadlock in the fifth minute at the Hawthorns Stadium.
The former Birmingham City midfielder has made two assists in 13 appearances in the Premier League this term after an injury-hit start to the current campaign under Mourinho.
Ex-Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Murphy was impressed with Lingard’s performance in the Manchester United side against West Brom, pointing out that the youngster brought a different dimension to Mourinho’s starting XI.
“Last season when he first really cemented a place in the team I noticed his willingness to run in behind. At Palace, they played Rooney and Mata in the wide positions and they struggled to make any good runs. The penetration wasn’t there,” Murphy told Match of the Day on Saturday night.
“He has the pace and willingness to get in there. It’s all about timing… When he does get the ball to feet, he can dribble as well. He has good technique and he is confident. He drives at people… West Brom couldn’t cope with him. He was fighting for a place in the team and he has certainly given Mourinho a headache now.”
The Red Devils finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season.
Mourinho signed four players in the summer transfer window.
